These are artists not always Sicilian, but also Neapolitans, who import new languages into the island. Among the artisan workshops identified through the archival sources emerges that of the sculptors Signorello and Nicola Saporito. These are experts in the realization of sacred statuary and reveal through the stylistic characters of their works the constant reference to the Gaginian production. In particular, the sculptor Nicola Saporito creates, between the sixteen and the seventeenth century, a simulacrum depicting St. John the Baptist, identifiable by the work of the same name now preserved in the diocesan museum of Caltanissetta. The small sculpture recalls the St. John the Baptist designed by Antonello Gagini for Castelvetrano, but it is decidedly different from its language projected far beyond the late Mannerist culture and leaning towards the baroque proto stylistic figure.

Davide Dal Bosco
